Home Internet Monitoring · Beta

Is it the Wi‑Fi or the ISP?

HopSense monitors your home internet from your own Windows, Mac or Linux computer. Twice a second it measures your Wi-Fi and the line beyond your router separately, so when the connection slows or drops, you know which one to blame.

Free for up to five computers during the beta. No password, no card.

The HopSense details window: a live score of 95, the path from this machine through the router to the internet with 2.0 ms on Wi-Fi and 5.1 ms past the router, Wi-Fi signal and band, and a latency chart for the last 30 minutes.

What HopSense Does

A speed test shows one moment. HopSense watches all the time and tells you whose fault it was.

Wi-Fi and ISP, measured apart

Latency, jitter and packet loss on two legs: your Wi-Fi to the router, and the line beyond it. A slow evening gets an address.

A score that names its reason

Zero to a hundred, with a sentence saying whether responsiveness, reliability or speed pulled it down.

Will the call hold?

Verdicts for video calls, gaming, browsing and streaming, each with the figure it was decided by.

Outages in seconds

Every outage with a start, an end and the leg it happened on. Sleep, VPNs and hotspots are never counted against your provider.

Your ISP, scored on its own

The home provider is scored apart from the office or café Wi-Fi, so another network never pulls your line down.

Measures the line, not you

Signed summaries only. Never your Wi-Fi name, the sites you visit or your traffic. Data stays in the EU or India.

A sentence, not a graph to interpret

The dashboard leads with what happened, scores your provider apart from everywhere else, and says whether calls, games, browsing and streaming will hold.

The HopSense dashboard for one laptop: the headline 'No internet for 2 minutes at 22:09', scores of 92 on the home ISP, 87 elsewhere and 92 overall, the Wi-Fi and WAN legs of the path, and four application verdicts.
One of our own laptops over one day. Provider names and addresses are replaced; everything else is what HopSense measured.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my slow internet the Wi-Fi or my ISP?
HopSense answers exactly that. It measures two legs separately, twice a second: from your computer to your router over Wi-Fi, and from the router to the internet. When something is slow or drops, it says which leg held the delay, so you know whether to move closer to the router or call your provider.
How is HopSense different from a speed test?
A speed test shows one moment and cannot tell your Wi-Fi from your line. HopSense measures all the time, under the traffic your home actually makes, keeps the two legs apart, and records outages in seconds with a start and an end.
Is HopSense free?
Yes, during the beta. A home can monitor up to five computers at no cost. Sign-up is an email address and a link: no password, no card.
Which computers does HopSense run on?
Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit), macOS 12 or later on Apple Silicon and Intel, and Linux (x86_64). None of them needs administrator rights to install. The probe is open source under the MIT licence.
